Operation Bot Roast

The FBI has issued a press release about their newest taskforce operation, Operation Bot Roast.

I am a member of the Botnet Task Force, and I presented at a BTF conference a few months ago. My presentation was very second rate compared to some of my colleges who also presented. The information presented by those experts was amazing and I am happy to see law enforcement putting that information to good use.

Many thanks goes to those who attended, presented and continue to support BTF! It is by far the most technically advanced anti-botnet team. I look forward to attending future conferences and learning more.

Due to content, I am unable to release my presentation to the public. However, I am willing to provide it to select, verified members of the botnet mitigation community. If you think that might include you, please feel free to email me at nalbright [[at]] disog [[dot]] org and we can discuss your involvement.

It is important for me to see these events from law enforcement, and you should understand US Secret Service and US FBI are both very active in botnet investigations. Many times we are not allowed to discuss the intelligence we have with the public because of on going criminal investigations. I promise you both US and International law enforcement are using every resource available to them.

Sunbelt Software - Making a difference

The Beginning: http://www.securityfocus.com/news/11440
The Middle: http://www.securityfocus.com/news/11469
The End: .......

Alex Eckelberry spearheaded a campaign to free Julie after she was wrongly convicted of child endangerment charges related to porn popups on her school machine.

The machine was not protected by any content filters, firewalls, or even an up to date anti-virus. It was running an unsupported Microsoft Operating System, and many teachers shared the credentials.

Alex wasn't the only one to help out on this case, but he sure played a big part. I know Alex, and spoke with him when he started this fight. Using forensics tools, these security experts will prove that the jury was mislead in this case, and in the unlikely event there is a second trial, I am confident Julie will be exonerated.

Alex and his staff can often be found giving up their free time helping users remove malware from their machines. Alex also plays a significant part in the fight against botnets. I respect his devotion.

If you have some free time tonight, you might consider sending Alex and his staff a letter of support. Alex, his employee's and several other security researchers offered their time and expertise to Julie at NO CHARGE. Support (at) sunbelt-software.com is probably a good place to start - right? :)
